In this opening segment, see how a simple yet attractive path will transform the featured property and discover how easy it is to create the path outline....
- To create the general outline of the walkway, toss the garden hose out into a wide arc and then pull it into place (figure A).
- Aim for soft gentle curves that flow naturally. Walk the path and adjust the hose until you're happy with the layout (figure B). Then mark the line with chalk powder (figure C).
A path that's wide enough for two people or one person with a wheelbarrow should be at least 24". Here's an easy way to keep your spacing even throughout the walk: use 2' wooden dowels as spacers (figure D).Place one end of the dowel on the chalk mark and then line up the garden hose on the other end. You could eyeball it, but using the dowels guarantees a consistent width and a more professional finish. Use more chalk powder to mark the other side of the path.To mark the position of the stairs, just chalk lines across the path where you want them to go (figure E). Once the sod is removed, excavate the walkway bed by digging a trench to a depth of at least 6" (figure F). Periodically stop and measure the depth and width of the trench to make sure it's even. But don't excavate the step area just yet.
The next step in creating the walkway is to install something to help keep the gravel filler from spreading into the yard. This inexpensive plastic edging is designed especially for a walk like this (figure G). We'll drive plastic stakes through the holes to hold the edging in place.Line up the edging against the side of the trench. It should stick up above the side by about 1' 2". Anchor it in place by driving plastic by driving plastic stakes through the holes and into the ground using a 3 pound sledgehammer (figure H).
