Q: I want to interest my children in growing vegetables, but I want them to see some success quickly so they'll stick with it. What would you recommend as an easy-to-grow plant that they can begin with?

A: (Ask DIY gardening expert Joe Lamp'l) With just a few steps you can grow most any vegetable in your area, but one that is almost fail-proof is any kind of bean. There are several reasons for this

    :

    • Beans are easy to grow.

    • They can be planted from seed.

    • Beans don't require a lot of fertilization.

    • They grow quickly and reliably.

    • Some varieties, such as pole beans, can be grown in pots.

Q: I want to start a vegetable garden that my kids will enjoy working in with me. Do you have any ideas of how I should start?

A: I agree with your line of thinking. It's easier to keep kids interested in doing the work if you make the activity more fun. What about a theme garden (such as a salsa or a pizza garden) for a unique twist that will also be a fun payoff when you harvest your crops.

Q: How can I make popcorn for my kids from my own corn crop?

A: Popcorn can be a healthy snack alternative for kids, and you can make your own from the crops you grow in your backyard. All you have to do is have a little patience -- and get ready for the yummy end result. Remember: Growing popcorn is the same as growing sweet corn until harvest time.

    1. Leave ears on stalks until stalks are brown and dry.

    2. Remove ears, strip husks, hang ears in a mesh bag and continue to dry for four to six weeks.

    3. Remove kernels and store in a jar or other airtight container.

    4. Pop as you would store-bought corn.

Money-Saver Tip: Here's a fun, inexpensive project for kids: Grow your own avocado tree.

    1. Put three toothpicks in a clean avocado seed (to hold it out of the water).

    2. Place the seed, fat side down, in a glass or jar of water, leaving the toothpicks propped on the edge of the glass. Leave about 1/2" of the seed above the water.

    3. Change the water often.

    4. Once the seed has sprouted, plant it in dirt.
