The putting green is elevated and surrounded by partially buried boulders and rocks of varying sizes, providing vertical structure and dimension. Locate rocks and arrange for their delivery prior to construction of the green.
- Lay out area for the putting green and planting area in a freeform kidney bean shape. Draw the boundaries with spray paint, powdered chalk or flour.
- Remove turf to a depth of at least 4" to remove the root system of the old grass so it will not eventually interfere with the new turf. Shovel cut for a clean border edge.
- Use a pre-emergent herbicide to ensure the old turf roots are killed.
- With the turf removed, paint, chalk or flour an interior border for the putting green (figure A).
- Use a handtruck to bring in the boulders if they are not placed by the quarry when delivered. Arrange the largest boulders around the border first, then add medium-size boulders (figure B).
Determine which side of the boulders should face up or out, then using a crowbar, leverage the boulders up and dig out a foot or so beneath them (figure C). This helps to stabilize them and gives a natural buried look. Reset and backfill around them with 6" of soil. Try to create an irregular edge that can be filled in with small rocks prior to planting.Topsoil is brought in to create a berm inside the rock perimeter. A berm is a raised mound of earth often used for diverting water. When the topsoil is at a depth of 6", mist the soil and tamp down to remove air pockets and smooth out the soil surface (figure D). Add 6 more inches of soil, mist and tamp again.Add smaller rocks, to achieve a more natural looking landscape (figure E). Two smaller rocks of different sizes against a larger rock creates the most natural look.
