    When planting on a slope it is necessary to make a fairly large hole with all excavated material going on the downhill side. The hole is cut out of the upside of the slope with scooped out materials being used as fill material around the plant (figure A). The term used for this is cut and fill.

    When packing the soil around the plants build a crescent-shaped berm, (a narrow ledge, mound or wall of earth) on the downhill side of the slope (figure B). In the back of the plant leave a trench behind the plant that connects to the berm (figure C). This creates a basin to catch water, allowing it to pool and slowly saturate the soil and the rootball of the plant.
