Drip irrigation is ideal for small spaces. It is more efficient and cheaper to install than sprinklers and reduces run-off. The constant moisture available to plant root systems promotes better plant growth.

There are numerous types of drip systems available. Look for one that attaches directly to an existing faucet and follow installation instructions. Pieces snap together and can be customized to fit individual needs (figure A). Pre-installed holes in the hose emit water at regular intervals (figure B), and additional emitters can be attached to the hoses to customize the water needs of the plants they will surround (figure C). These hoses can be stiff when first out of the box -- if left in the sun prior to installation, they will become pliable. Check periodically for calcium deposits that may cause the holes to clog.

Low voltage lighting allows a garden to shine at night and creates an inviting glow around the patio perimeter. Lights in the landscape should always be subtle and highlight plants or artistic garden elements -- they should never be harsh or placed to be a focal point themselves -- they work best when nestled in among foliage (figure D). A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) should be within 100 feet of the area to be lit. If this needs to be installed, make sure the work is completed by a licensed electrician. The lighting system here allows for four lights on one electrical cord, spaced to highlight individual plants. Now it's time to sit back and enjoy the view!
