The plants used here are compatible with a midwestern climate. Check your local nurseries, garden centers and DIYnet.com for plants that are suitable for your planting zone. Look for plants that can provide a variety of color, texture and movement in the terrace bed. When planting on slopes be aware of the root system of a plant in relation to its height. Taller plants are more influenced by wind because they will not have as much room to stabilize their roots systems on a slope.
Burns is using the following plants:- Arizona Cypress (Cupressus Arizonica 'Blue Pyramid'), beautiful blue/green foliage, very drought tolerant, makes a great wind screen & offers privacy.
- Abelia (Abelia X Grandiflora 'Sunrise'), variegated foliage gives color even when it's dark, and provides lots of color interest as the foliage colors turn yellow, orange and red with seasonal change.
- Blue Fescue (Festuca Cinerea 'Elijah Blue'), a favorite among ornamental grasses. It is very drought tolerant and provides a dramatic accent with blooms of buff colored plumes that sway with summer breezes.
