A quick project for kids that uses stuff you probably already have around the house is eggshell faces, says show host Kim Haworth. Make one, a couple, or a dozen, following these instructions:

    1. Take the top off of a uncooked egg shell. Hold it over a bowl with one hand, and use a sharp knife to rap a neat circle around the top of the egg with your other hand (figure A), letting the yolk and whites drain into the bowl.

    2. Wash out the shell and let it dry.

    3. Fill the shell with potting soil, tamping it down gently.

    4. Sprinkle an even layer of any finely-textured, fast-sprouting seed on the soil. Grass, alfalfa, or lettuce all work well.

    5. Put the filled shell back in the carton, and water every day with a few squirts from a spray bottle (this is a great job for a kid). In five days, the shells will have a head of short green "hair."

    6. As soon as the hair is up and growing, draw a face on the shell with a marker. Use pipe cleaners to make eyeglasses, if you like.
