A quick project for kids that uses stuff you probably already have around the house is eggshell faces, says show host Kim Haworth. Make one, a couple, or a dozen, following these instructions: - Take the top off of a uncooked egg shell. Hold it over a bowl with one hand, and use a sharp knife to rap a neat circle around the top of the egg with your other hand (figure A), letting the yolk and whites drain into the bowl.
- Wash out the shell and let it dry.
- Fill the shell with potting soil, tamping it down gently.
- Sprinkle an even layer of any finely-textured, fast-sprouting seed on the soil. Grass, alfalfa, or lettuce all work well.
- Put the filled shell back in the carton, and water every day with a few squirts from a spray bottle (this is a great job for a kid). In five days, the shells will have a head of short green "hair."
- As soon as the hair is up and growing, draw a face on the shell with a marker. Use pipe cleaners to make eyeglasses, if you like.
