Kids love to work with clay, especially when making terra-cotta garden markers. They're simple to make with cookie cutters, biscuit cutters or designs you can find around the house.

    Materials:

    Workable clay

    Rolling pin or dowel

    Design cutter

    Plastic knife

    12" sturdy stick

    Acrylic paint

    Acrylic spray

    Safety mask

    Safety glasses

    1. Ask a parent's permission before you begin. Flatten your clay with a rolling pin or a large dowel (figure A).

    2. Cut out your design. You can use a cookie cutter to make a heart-shaped marker (figure B). If you love pizza, use the knife to write the word pizza on your marker (figure C). Or make a flower design using a large and a small biscuit cutter (figure D).

    3. Before the clay dries, insert the stick in the bottom of the marker, and allow it to dry according to package directions (figure E).

    4. Finally, paint your design as you like (figure F). With a parent's permission, go outside and spray with acrylic to seal (figure G). Be sure to wear your safety glasses and mask.

    5. Once your garden marker is dry, use it inside or out.
