Q: I have several pine trees in my yard, and the needles kill the grass when they fall. Are there any plants that would do well living underneath them, and should I turn the area into a garden bed?

A: Obviously you want an acid-loving plant. Try plumbago or maybe azaleas. Look at a picture of the area and sketch a diagram of where plants should go.

Q: What are the little white bugs on the petals and leaves of my rose plants, and how do I get rid of them?

A: Probably aphids. Try washing them away with water --but avoid using an insecticide, which can kill beneficial ladybugs (which also eat aphids). You might also consider the use of an insecticidal soap.

Kim's Money-Saving Tip: Looking for an organic way to kill weeds that's easy on the pocketbook? Try these! For dandelions, put salt on the base of the weed. It's a slow elimination, but kills the weed at the root. For other weeds, spray with vinegar on a calm day with no wind.
