Q: I grew some annuals in a pot last summer and took them out when the season was over. The soil is still in the pot. Can I re-use the same soil, or do I need to dump it out and put fresh soil in?

A: Put in fresh soil to prevent insects and diseases that may be lurking in the old soil. In addition, there will be nutrients in the new soil that probably are no longer present in old, compacted soil.

Q: What is the best way to repair a wound in a tree?

A: The best thing to do is simply to clean away the ragged wood from the wounded area.

Q: I am planting a new dogwood tree. Do I need to stake the tree? How do I do that properly without damaging the bark?

A Yes, you should stake it, because you need to train a young tree how to stand on its own. The key is how you stake: tie loosely, being careful not to drive the stake through the root ball.
