When two surfaces meet, a smooth transition is required to prevent tripping or falls. This is even more crucial if the area is being used by individuals with compromised mobility.

Decomposed granite is used for the walkways. It is affordable, easy to install and maintain, and has a soft, porous composition that allows for good drainage. Available in three colors of reddish-brown, gray, or a golden hued tone, it compacts down and forms a firm surface (figure A).

A depth of 1-1/2" of decomposed granite is spread out over the walkways up to the driveway (figure B). It is then wet down with a hose to help remove air bubbles.

A sod roller is then rolled over the granite (figure C), helping compact it in place. It will pack down more over time and will have a feel similar to asphalt.
