All the elements are in place, so now the garden needs -- plants (figure A)!

Expert tip: (Dennis Conner, Monrovia Growers) You want to be sure, when growing herbs and vegetables in containers, that you use a potting soil that is rich in compost and other nutrients so that the plants will perform well in the container for you.

    Herbs

The bottom tier is planted with the following herbs:

    • Tricolor sage

    • Regular sage

    • Variegated thyme

    • Purple basil

    • Onion chives.

    Vegetables

The second tier is planted with these vegetables:

    • Green beans

    • Crookneck squash

    • Eggplant.

Color is added to the garden with orange calendulas and blue pansies, both of which have edible blooms.

The third tier, the one nearest the potting bench, will hold the tallest plants:

    • Cherry tomatoes

    • Silver Queen corn.

Expert tip: (Dennis Conner, Monrovia Growers) When mapping out your vegetable garden in containers, it's very important to remember to put the larger-growing vegetables in the back and the shorter, smaller-producing vegetable plants in the front. This way you won't have any overcrowding issues to deal with.

Expert tip: (Scott Daigre, landscape designer) All the herbs that you'll want to plant in your container garden generally demand the same things: they want a lot of sun, they want good drainage and in general they don't need a lot of TLC. That's the great thing about an herb garden.

In the long planting box, three large potted citrus trees provide a sense of enclosure (and later, some tasty fruit!). The planting border serves to hold in a layer of wood chips (figure B), and the pots in which the trees are planted are in keeping with the midcentury theme. Each tree is underplanted with a different type of lettuce: Romaine under the lemon tree, curly red under the lime tree and curly green under the orange tree (figure C). Lettuces are usually a winter crop, but the trees should provide enough shade to make their cultivation possible in warmer weather.

Expert tip: (Dennis Conner, Monrovia Growers) Growing citrus in containers is fun and easy to do. You can control the size of the tree in the container, and you'll get an abundance of delicious fruit.
