    Steps

    • Irises grow from thick, underground stems called rhizomes. Carefully dig up the iris clumps and cut the rhizomes apart with a sharp knife. Each division should have several large roots.

    • Trim the long leaves in to a fan shape after you have divided.

    • In replanting, dig a hole large enough to accommodate the rhizome and roots. When planted, the rhizome should be just below the soil surface.

    • Water each plant thoroughly.
