Gardening expert Walter Reeves is going through the process of dividing irises.
Steps- Irises grow from thick, underground stems called rhizomes. Carefully dig up the iris clumps and cut the rhizomes apart with a sharp knife. Each division should have several large roots.
- Trim the long leaves in to a fan shape after you have divided.
- In replanting, dig a hole large enough to accommodate the rhizome and roots. When planted, the rhizome should be just below the soil surface.
- Water each plant thoroughly.
Tips
- Bearded irises need to be divided every four to five years. Siberian irises need to be divided every two years.
- Divide and replant your irises all in one day.
