Ellen Nemhauser's historic garden in Atlanta, Georgia, receives a lot of tender loving care, and it shows! The grounds are lush and full of seasonal color, thanks in large part to a group of neighbors who banned together to form the "Soil Sisters". The women of the Soil Sisters spend an entire day each month working on a member's garden, interrupted only by a leisurely brunch. Member Sharon Abercrombie explains that no matter how big or small the job is, the Sisters lend a hand. "Next month the group is taking on my front yard, which needs a major renovation," says Sharon, "but the results will be something we'll all be proud of. It really is a wonderful way to get to know your neighbors and learn more about gardening." In addition to working on each others gardens, the Sisters attend workshops on gardening and help research future projects. "Each of us has some knowledge or experience that can be shared with the group," explains Ellen, "we're not all master gardeners here." Ellen says that it's easy to start a Soil Sisters group, and that the concept is flourishing throughout Atlanta. Regarding the name, "Soil Sisters," Ellen explains that the group had first considered "Filthy Fingers" but decided against it.
