Lance Walheim, the author of Lawn Care for Dummies, explains that the best way to keep weeds from invading your lawn is to maintain a healthy, vigorous growing turf through proper watering, fertilizing and mowing. A healthy lawn is denser and better able to resist weeds than a neglected one. Walheim's tips for preventing weeds include the following: - Hand weed using proper tools.
- Maintain a healthy turf by watering, fertilizing and aerating.
A few weeds are inevitable in most lawns. You can often keep them at bay by pulling them by hand. Your nursery carries a variety of tools that simplify this chore, including the fishtail (figure A), leverage (figure B) and Japanese (figure C) weeders. Remember: To get rid of a weed, you have to get to its root. If the weeds get out of control, you may have to use a herbicide or Weed and FeedB. Be aware that these products are effective only when the weeds are properly identified and the product is applied at the right time of year. For more information on controlling weeds in your lawn, see Lawn Care for Dummies , by Lance Walheim, published by IDG Books Worldwide. Quick Tip: - Alternate your mowing pattern by mowing at a 45- or 90-degree angle from your last mowing direction. This helps prevent soil compaction and also helps grass grow upright.
