Want an easier way to achieve the look of stained glass? Meg Licursi, of Plaid Enterprises, offers this technique for creating glass art that's hard to distinguish from the real thing! Materials: Styrene blank Glass-art pattern of choice Crystal beads Assorted glass nuggets Gallery-glass tool set (available from Plaid Enterprises) Prepackaged strips and circles Silver gilding medium Liquid leading Iridescent paint (in squeeze bottle) Cotton swabs Toothpicks Glass cleaner Paper towels Soft cloth - Clean styrene blank with glass cleaner to remove any dust or static.
- Place pattern beneath styrene blank, securing with tape if needed.
- Rub silver gilding medium over the lead strips and circles; buff with soft cloth or paper towel (figure A).
- Place strips where indicated on pattern to form outlines (figure B). Use cutting tool for precise cuts and measurements.
- Place a small dot of liquid leading in each space where the lead strips meet. (This creates the look of soldered joints and bonds the pieces together.) Allow to dry at least an hour. When the joints are firm, rub a small amount of silver gilding over them to complete the look.
- Using the pattern as a guide, begin applying colors within the lines, working on inside portions of the picture first (figure C). Squeeze the color along the outlines right up to leading and then into the center. (Paint should be applied generously but should not overflow the leading).
- Use metal combing tool to "comb" through the paint to even out the distribution and eliminate air bubbles (figure D). Additional bubbles can be minimized by periodically tapping the underside of the blank during the paint application process.
- Add more color as desired. (Don't revisit a painted area once finished, however, as the paint has already started to set. To change an area, allow it to dry overnight. Then score the area with the cutting tool and lift it away. Reapply color as desired.)
- Allow entire project to dry overnight before displaying.
