Although the effect looks blotchy on the painted side, on the reverse side it's crystal-clear and elegant!

Reverse painting on glass looks more complicated than it is. It requires painting a design on one side of glass that is viewed from the other side. Author and artist Edie Stockstill shares the reverse glass painting method.

    Materials: Traced or freehand design
    Glass
    Black acrylic-enamel paint
    Several colors of acrylic-enamel paint
    Long liner brush
    Small paintbrushes
    Water

Begin by choosing a design to duplicate. Trace the design or draw one freehand.

    1. Tape the traced pattern on the right side of the glass -- the side that will be viewed.

    2. Use acrylic enamel (which is a permanent glass paint) and a long liner brush to begin painting the outline of the pattern on the reverse side of the glass (figure A).

    3. Complete all detail lines and allow to dry completely.

    4. Next, use a different brush to begin painting colors within the lines (figure B). Blend to outline colors.

    5. After main colors have dried, begin adding accent colors -- in this case, the green leaves are accented with a bit of white (figure C).

    6. When paint has dried, display the item so that the painting can be viewed from the other side.
