Leave a lasting impression on dinner guests with beautiful etched-glass dinnerware. Whitney Ferre of the Creative Fitness Center demonstrates the technique. Materials:
Glassware Etching cream Masking tape Denatured alcohol or window cleaner Black permanent marker Craft knife Stiff paintbrush Sponge or rag - Make sure the glass is clean and dry. Mask off the entire rim of the dinner plate.
- Draw the desired design on the masking tape around the rim, using a permanent marker. Whitney used a leaf design (figure A).
- Use a craft knife to cut through the masking tape around the design. Peel away the masking tape, exposing the glass beneath the leaf shapes (figure B).
- Using a stiff brush, apply a generous amount of etching cream to the exposed glass. Let the cream set for 10 minutes.
- Rinse away the cream under running water, using a sponge or rag.
