Leave the name tag on bottom of rose. This will help to always identify what type of rose you have in the ground. The center of the plant should be open so that all the leaves that exist in this area receive plenty of sun and plenty of air circulation. Hence, trim all conflicting canes. Any cane smaller than a pencil gets cut from the plant. Select four solid thick wood canes. This is known as the framework wood of the rose. Remember: When pruning, you are doing so for both flower and shape at the same time. Prune three buds up from the parent cane. If that bud is not facing outward, move on to the fourth bud. The parent cane is the point that the new branch is growing from. Always prune 1/4 inch above the last bud to account for die back. Make a clean cut, at a 45-degree angle.
