Keeping a rose garden healthy and beautiful requires regular maintenance and a little know-how.

    Instructions:

    1. Use plastic garden ties to loosely tie the rose to the arch to encourage its growth towards the arbor (figure A). Climbing roses can grow from eight to 30 feet tall.

    2. Regularly monitor plants for problems. Once the heat of summer arrives, some roses are susceptible to a maggot that likes to burrow into the stem of the plant. This causes the end of the cane to wilt and foliage to wrinkle (figure B). Carefully prune away the affected part to avoid the maggot from spreading to other bulbs (figure C).

Expert note (Kristen Cantrell, horticulturist): Some antique rose varieties are extremely hardy in northern coastal conditions because they adapt to the pH balance in sandy soil and have great salt tolerance.
