    Figure C

After choosing plants and laying out the design of your antique rose garden, it's time to position the roses. Staggering the size and color of your roses will combine with the layout to support the forced perspective; you want to make the garden seem rich and full.

    • Gilmer uses rows of red, yellow and two kinds of pink roses. The first pink rose is the pale Comtesse de Provence rose (Figure A). This choice contrasts nicely with the vivid pink of the Leonardi Da Vinci rose (figure B).

    Instructions:

    1. Use spray paint to indicate where each row of roses will be planted. Diagonal rows -- rather than straight across -- contribute to the sense of depth within the garden and should be placed three to four feet apart (figure C).

    2. Plant rows of roses, one color per row. Darker colors should be in the back and then the colors lighten as the rows move towards the front. The size of the roses should also decrease from back to front.

Expert tip (Bart O'Brien, horticulturist): Typically, species roses are small-flowered, single-bloom roses with five petals. The hybrid varieties are usually large flowers with many petals.

    FYI:

    • Always water your roses underneath the blooms. This prevents water from collecting on the blooms and contributing to sunburn. Also, planting your rose garden in a spot with lots of morning sun to dry excess dew will help stop sunburn.
