  • Choosing Flowers to Complement Hedges

    episode ADI-607

Q: I want to plant flowers in front of my hedges, but I don't know how to select the right varieties. Do you have some suggestions?

A: (Gardening expert, Walter Reeves) Here are the three things to consider when selecting your plants:

Both the yellow blossoms and the gray-green foliage of the new plants are a good contrast against the darker green of the hedges. In addition, all the plants selected will thrive in the sunny area.
    • Amount of light. For the sunny area in this demonstration, I selected yarrow, rudbeckia and coreopsis -- all in shades of yellow to brighten the hedgerow. For this same area, I would avoid more delicate flowers that aren't as heat tolerant -- such as impatiens. So, select flowers that will do well in the area where they will be planted.

    • Consider colors of both blossoms and foliage. Think about the contrast of the new plant foliage against the hedges. Will it work well? Also, think about how groups of colors will work together. Consider putting flats of different colors together at your nursery for visual assistance.

    • Think about height. During the selection process, think about varying the heights of your plants. To prevent any unpleasant surprises, read labels carefully to check spacing of plants and size at maturity.

    Tips for Planting:

    • Add organic matter to soften and enrich soil before planting.

    • After planting, the top of the root ball should be level with surrounding soil.

    • A water wand is a good choice for watering.

    • Slow-release fertilizers work for long periods and save time.

    • Finish recently planted flower beds with a layer of mulch.
