  • Quick-Tip: Forcing Blooms
  • From "Ask DIY"

If unusually cold spring weather is wreaking havoc with your flowering shrubs, or you just need a little spring early inside your home, it's possible to "fool Mother Nature" and force your flowering shrubs to bloom early and indoors.

    • One of the easiest shrubs to force is Forsythia. Choose branches that have quite a few large buds. These are usually located toward the top of the shrub.

    • Cut the branches to the length that you want using a slant cut.

    • Quickly place the branches in a vase containing cold water. Place the branches in a cool place for a couple of days, then move them to a sunny location. The flowers will start to bloom in one to three weeks.

    • This process can be used with a number of flowering shrubs, including Pussy Willow.
