A grow bag turns ordinary lantana into a cylinder of white.

Disney bedding plant specialist Heather Will-Browne shows how "grow bags" can help you add color to those hard-to-decorate areas of the patio. These versatile cylinders can literally be stuffed with your favorite plants and hung either vertically or horizontally.

Grow bags (figure A) can be purchased at most garden centers and in catalogs, or you can make one yourself with burlap or a pair of jeans (tie the bottom of the legs shut with twine).

Stuff the grow bag with potting soil. Then use a pair of scissors to cut holes at regular intervals, and insert plants (figure B).

Grow bags will likely inspire you to think of other uses as well. Maybe you'll want to stack them atop each other to create a tall column or hang them along a porch railing; or maybe use them to give a favorite canvas tote bag a second life.
