Every year the National Gardening Association runs a contest that encourages children to create a garden. NGA's Charlie Nardozzi shows us some recent winners, which reflect gardening themes in children's literature. One child designed his garden around the story of Pocahontas. His design included blue corn and an heirloom tomato called 'Cherokee Purple' that was grown by the Cherokee tribe. Another winner added brilliant colors inspired by Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland. She added a rabbit hole to her design, selected Queen Anne's Lace to represent the queen of hearts and incorporated a model of the Cheshire cat. You can incorporate all sorts of props in a children's garden, such as a plastic fire hat, an old boot or half of a basketball. Just drill drainage holes, and you've got a unique planter. Use recycled toys as a trellis. An old rim from a bicycle can provide support for climbing vines such as nasturtiums, morning glories or scarlet runner beans. Try combining all these seeds for a nice mix of flowers. Featured plants provided by Wolf River Valley Farms.
