Dollars and SenseThe DIY Garden Sense team used 14 plants in Hardiness Zone 9.
- The most expensive parts of the landscape were the granite and boulders.
- Host Walter Reeves used six big boulders, each one cost between $90 and $120. He highly recommends that you pay a nursery to deliver and place the boulders in your landscape.
- The granite cost close to $285 to buy and have six and a half tons delivered.
- The Ocotillo was the most expensive plant at about $40.
- The Blackfoot Daisies were the least expensive; they cost $5 each for 1-gallon pots.
Plant prices may vary by zone.
Not So Sensible SelectionOne plant to avoid in a dry landscape is Purple Fountain Grass. You see it all over the place in other parts of the country as a drought tolerant grass. But in this part of the country, Purple Fountain Grass can be a real invader. So if you have a landscape plant list, run that list past a garden expert before you buy and ask if any of the plants on this list are invasive or have the potential to be invasive in your zone. The garden expert probably could give you some alternative plants that would be great for your garden but much more importantly not be invasive in your landscape. Sensible Tools These are the tools and garden supplies used on our project by Walter and the DIY team and also given to the homeowners to help care for their new landscape: Miracle-Gro Shake N Feed (www.miraclegro.com) Miracle-Gro Weed Preventer and Plant food (www.miraclegro.com) Ortho Insect Killer (www.ortho.com) Home Gardener 9-piece watering set Rain Bird Gardener Drip Kit (www.rainbird.com) Corona Shovel (www.coronaclipper.com) Corona Pruning Saw (www.coronaclipper.com) Corona Hedge Shear (www.coronaclipper.com) Corona Garden Tote Bag (www.coronaclipper.com) Corona Wheelbarrow (www.coronaclipper.com) Waterworks Industrial Hose Containers provided by www.arizonapottery.com
