    Lactuca sativa 'Simpson Elite'--Simpson Elite Lettuce

    • Cool season, large variety lettuce with medium green color and crumpled edges
    • Fast growing variety, maturing in 48 days
    • Plant in full sun
    • Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral soil
    • Height: 12-14 inches
    • Width: 24 inches

    Cool Season Annual

    • All Zones: Plants can handle light frosts. Start seeds indoors eight weeks before last average frost date. Plant outdoors after four weeks. Harvest plants before hot weather sets in or plants may bolt (flower) making them undesirable. In warmer zones with (7 and higher) a second crop may be planted in the fall.

    Hardy in USDA zones (7b) 8-11:

    • Zones 2-7: Plant in spring after danger of frost has passed; cut back foliage and bring indoors before frost or discard plants after killing frost; may survive in zone 7b with extra mulch.

    • Zones 8-11: Plant in spring; mulch in fall; prune away old foliage in fall.

    Rudbeckia hirta 'Becky'--Becky Gloriosa Daisy (Black-Eyed Susan)

    • Annual with 3-5 inch golden-orange daisy-like flowers
    • Plant in well-drained soil
    • Plant in full sun
    • Deadhead to promote continued blooming; may reseed
    • Space generously to allow for good air circulation
    • Height: 10 inches
    • Width: 12-18 inches

    Annual in all zones (seems to die in fall no matter how warm):

    • Zones 2-8: Plant in spring after danger of frost has passed; collect seed in fall for planting the following spring; discard plants after killing frost.

    • Zones 9-11: Plant in spring or sow seeds in fall when ripe; discard plants in fall.
