Dollars and SenseTwenty plants were used in Hardiness Zone 6 and approximately $1,100 was spent. The most expensive plant was the Ukigomo tree. It cost about $150. The least expensive plants were the dahlias at $9, but that's not cheap. Costs were cut by reusing the salvia, sedum and rudbeckia. All are easy to replant. Plant prices may vary by zone.
Not so Sensible SelectionsWalter and his team used Green Mountain boxwoods for this project because they grow about five-feet tall. But some other varieties of boxwoods will be much shorter or taller, so be careful when choosing one for your project. Green Tower boxwoods would be a poor choice for this project because they'll grow up to nine-feet tall and really overwhelm the space. On the flipside, Compacta or Kingsville Boxwoods are not sensible selections because they won't grow tall enough. They only grow to about a foot tall and would look silly at the base of the deck. When covering up the base and the supports of deck don't forget about the view from the deck. You should buy some substantial plants like the Ukigomo Japanese Maple chose for this project. It's a sensible selection because it will get six to 12 feet tall. Avoid buying dwarf maples. They only get three to five 5 feet tall.
