Building the Countertop and PlanterThe finish the patio project, the Whitmores and their crew build a raised planter and a countertop for entertaining.
Materials 1 (8'x3') copper sheet, 1/4" 1 (8'x2') copper sheet, 1/4" cedar planks deck screwsPlants 4 (8') Techny Arborvitae 2 (2") Thornless Honeylocust mulch First they construct an L-shaped frame for a bar using the remaining boards from the old deck. They attach copper siding for the countertop to give it a unique look (figure A). (Note: Always wear gloves when working with copper or any other metal sheeting.) They secure the copper with screws. Next they construct a cedar planter box to go on the patio. The cedar accents the paver colors, and flowers add a spot of color (figure B).
Finally, they plant some trees around the patio (figure C) and add mulch for a finishing touch. The new plantings provide a natural backdrop for the stone patio (figure D). Intimate seating areas and a small copper fire pit round out the design, the perfect setting for relaxing and entertaining (figure E).
