How to Eliminate Poison IvyUse care when battling poison ivy in your garden or yard. One option to protect yourself is to wear tall garden gloves that cover your whole arm. They generally cost about $13 and will protect your skin if you come into contact with poison ivy. The key is to wash them well after use or the poison ivy oil can linger for years. Soap and water will do fine, but we strongly recommend you don't skip this step. You can find chemicals to kill poison ivy. Walter believes the ones that work best contain glyphosate or triclopyr. But keep in mind that these chemicals will kill nearby plants as well. Important reminders:
- Don't put poison ivy in your compost pile. It can cause reactions years from now.
- Never burn poison ivy because you can have a reaction just from inhaling the smoke.
Dollars and SenseWe used more than 10 new kinds of plants in Hardiness Zone 6 and spent more than $1,500 dollars due to the large space we needed to fill. The most expensive plant was the Serviceberry at $200. The least expensive plants were the Japanese ferns at $12 each. Plant prices may vary by zone.
