    Building a Water Feature

After the flowerbeds are complete, the crew builds a raised rectangular water feature next to the seating area.

    Materials
    (12'x12') 45-mil liner
    1 pump with fountain
    composite lumber
    timber spikes

First, the crew builds a box frame and levels it. They secure the frame by toenailing it into place; toenailing means to drive a nail in at an angle (figure A). They stack several frames (figure B), making sure that each layer is level and flush, and secure the frames together with timber spikes (figure C).

Next, they fill the box with a 45-millimeter-thick rubber liner (figure D) and use a utility knife to trim off the excess. Then they attach a sill to the top of the box frame, over the liner, to serve as a seating area (figure E). They apply a foam sealant to the top of the liner so no water will seep through. The water pump sits on a cinderblock in the middle of the basin so the fountain is at the desired height. Finally, they fill the box frame with water and turn on the pump.

The completed water feature next to the seating area provides the soothing sounds of water to help the Brandons enjoy their renovated garden (figure F). The simple box design reinforces and blends with the formal, rectangular flowerbeds.
