    Building the Gate/Screen

An area around the corner from the new patio contains air conditioning units and trash cans (figure A). To hide this area from the travertine patio area, a cedar gate/screen is built and anchored into the existing brick platform.

    Materials
    3 (4"x4"x8') cedar posts
    25 (1"x6"x8') cedar planks
    5 (2"x4"x8') cedar
1 set gate hardware (in black)
    2 masonry fasteners with plate

Note: Always be sure to wear safety goggles and gloves when cutting wood (figure B).

Cedar posts and planks are cut to fit the desired height of the gate/screen. The frame for the gate needs some clearance from the ground to make sure the wood does not soak up any excess water after a hard rain.

The screen is secured to the walkway instead of the house, so masonry anchors hold the base that supports the posts (Figure C). The screen and gate are then secured to the anchors with a lug bolt. The new cedar screen now separates the air conditioning unit and trash can area from the outdoor dining area (figure D).
