An array of perennials complete the border, bring instant color, height and texture to the landscape. The following plants are used:

    • Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus Africanus), which produces large midnight-blue blooms (figure A). This variety is winter hardy, but other varieties may need to be moved indoors in cold areas.

    • Daylily (Hemerocallis), in a shade of lemon yellow (figure B), is planted next to lily of the Nile.

    • Splish-splash cranesbill (Geranium Sanguineum Striatum), pink flowers with bronze foliage; a ground-hugging, winter-hardy plant (figure C), planted under the dahlia.

    • Beard tongue (Penstemon), a tall, heat-tolerant, cold-hardy variety, with deep-throated pink (figure D) and purple (figure E) flowers.

    • Pink spice cranesbill (Geraniun X 'Pink Spice'), a European variety, with pale-pink flowers (figure F).

    • Hummingbird salvia (Salvia Grahamii), an excellent border plant, loved by hummingbirds.

    • Goblin basket flower (Gaillardia X Grandiflora), an excellent perennial, develops into large clumps and produces orange-hued blooms.

    • With the plants in place, ornamental garden art is installed to provide additional interest to the border (figure G).
