All the plantings are in place; now comes the most fun part of all: creating an outdoor living space among all the verdure.

    • Place a small table and chairs in a shady area for relaxation and nature viewing (figure A).

    • A chiminea placed close to the seating area provides warmth and atmosphere in the evening.

    • Animal sculptures create a natural environment (figure B).

    Medicinal and Toxic Plants

As mentioned earlier, aloe is considered to have medicinal properties. It is nontoxic and can be used virtually anywhere on the body to help alleviate the irritation of scrapes, burns or rashes.

    1. Using a sharp knife, slice off a leaf close to the base of the plant (figure C).

    2. Cut off a section of the leaf (several inches wide) and make a cut halfway through on the rounded side.

    3. Fold the cut section back on itself to reveal the juicy flesh inside.

    4. Rub the fleshy center over skin as needed (figure D).

Euphorbia, when cut, weeps a white latex substance that is highly acidic and toxic to the skin. Different species of euphorbia have different toxicity levels. If contact occurs with skin or eyes, as a precaution, see your physician for an antidote.
