Now that the area is prepped, you need to start putting in a variety of plants to mimic the ecology of the veldt.

    1. Place rocks in desired areas of the garden.

    2. Aloes are an integral part of the South African garden, which has an abundance of more than 100 species (figure A). They are closely related to the lily family and can vary in size from a few inches to 20 feet in height. They have fleshy leaves, can produce colorful flowers (popular with hummingbirds) and are often used as medicinal plants in Africa. The taller species often become arborescent in the landscape: that is, they become treelike in their environment. Three species will be used in this garden:

    • Aloe (Aloe marlothii), which will create numerous offsets at its base as it matures. These offsets can easily be broken off by hand and replanted.

    • Grass aloe, which spreads like a ground cover

    • Coral aloe (Aloe striata), which develops an orange hue from exposure to the sun (figure B).

In addition to aloe, the following plants are used in the planting bed:

    • Euphorbia ingens (Cactus euphorbia) (figure C), which can grow to a height of five to 10 feet

    • Euphorbia stenoclada (Silver thicket) (figure D), characterized by very prickly spines.
