Katie Nelson paid just $5 for this table at a garage sale.

Here's the same table after Katie's transformation. She used wallpaper to turn it into a decorative accessory.

This old family heirloom needed a little sprucing up.

Now this trunk has Old World charm. Katie cut out architectural motifs from novelty wallpaper and applied them to the trunk with Mod Podge.

If you have a nondescript, unattractive or battered piece of furniture that needs some sprucing up, give it a quick and easy makeover by covering it with prepasted wallpaper. Katie Nelson, formerly of Waverly Fabrics, shows how to transform dull furniture or a flea-market find into a decorator piece.

    Materials:

    Prepasted wallpaper
Sheet of glass for tabletop (optional)
    Scissors
    Water
    Paper towels
    Polyurethane or Mod PodgeB.
    Paintbrushes
    Furniture to cover

    1. Clean the surface of the furniture to remove all dirt and dust.

    2. Measure the area to be covered, and cut the prepasted wallpaper to the exact size.

    3. Wet the wallpaper, and "book" it by placing adhesive sides together and letting it sit for three minutes to activate the adhesive.

    4. Carefully place the wallpaper on the furniture and smooth out any air bubbles (figure A).

    5. When the paper is dry to the touch, cover the surface with a protective coat of polyurethane.

    Tips:

    • If you're covering a table with wallpaper, brush on a coat of polyurethane to protect the paper.

    • If you'll be pasting wallpaper cutouts on a piece of furniture, use a coat of Mod Podge or other acrylic sealer to protect the cutouts and simulate an antique appearance.

    • Experiment with coordinating borders to add variety to the piece.

    • Wallpaper patterns containing books, flower bouquets and other faux looks produce especially pleasing results for this sort of project.
