A perforated PVC pipe lies at the core of this waxleaf begonia pillar.

Ever wonder how the gardening pros at Disney keep those majestic topiaries healthy and green? Here Disney gardening specialist Curtis Coakley shows how it's done. He explains that before the resort's sphagnum topiaries are created, irrigation lines are placed throughout their frames. These preinstalled irrigation systems may be fashioned from either standard irrigation drip tubes or perforated PVC pipe. During the summer months, depending on weather and humidity, topiaries often need to be watered twice a day.

In addition to making sure topiaries receive adequate hydration, Coakley says it's equally important to keep the growth neat and healthy by trimming. He advises using a pair of scissors to maintain leafy shapes, and suggests hand pruners for woody stems. Topiaries should also be fed periodically with a water-soluble fertilizer. To control pests such as aphids and mealybugs, spray the foliage with a weak solution of water and dishwashing liquid.
