    Figure A

Horticulturist Jim Long creates a small-scale trellis to be used indoors or out.

    Materials:

    Lopping shears
    Pruners
Block of wood or solid work surface
    Pliers
    Hammer
    Small nails
    Florist wire
Twigs and branches of various sizes

    1. Bend two 4' branches into a U-shape and secure with florist wire bridged horizontally across the bottom.

    2. Nail a horizontal crosspiece across center of U-shape (figure A) to hold the two sides together.

    3. Nail a second crosspiece closer to the top for more stability. Remove wire.

    4. Add a branch or twig vertically through the center from top to bottom. Nail thorugh twigs where vertical piece touches.

    5. Bend smaller, pliable twigs into half of a heart shape. At top of trellis, hold end of twigs and bend to center of vertical piece. Secure with florist wire. Repeat for other side to form heart.
