Horticulturist Jim Long creates a small-scale trellis to be used indoors or out. Materials: Lopping shears Pruners Block of wood or solid work surface Pliers Hammer Small nails Florist wire Twigs and branches of various sizes - Bend two 4' branches into a U-shape and secure with florist wire bridged horizontally across the bottom.
- Nail a horizontal crosspiece across center of U-shape (figure A) to hold the two sides together.
- Nail a second crosspiece closer to the top for more stability. Remove wire.
- Add a branch or twig vertically through the center from top to bottom. Nail thorugh twigs where vertical piece touches.
- Bend smaller, pliable twigs into half of a heart shape. At top of trellis, hold end of twigs and bend to center of vertical piece. Secure with florist wire. Repeat for other side to form heart.
