DIY Crafts host Vicki Payne explains how to dress up a purchased notebook journal, using twigs and stones.

    Twig Journal

    Materials:

Purchased journal notebook approximately 8 1/2" by 11"
    Corrugated paper
    White glue
    Willow twigs
    Garden clippers
    Scissors
    Heavy book

    1. Cut a piece of corrugated paper the size of the notebook's cover. Attach the paper to the cover with white glue. Place a heavy book on top of the paper while the glue dries (figure A).

    2. Cut willow twigs the height of the cover of the notebook, using garden clippers (figure B).

    3. Starting at the left side of the cover, run a bead of white glue from the top edge to the bottom, along the corrugated paper. Glue one willow twig to the paper (figure C).

    4. Continue working across the cover of the journal, gluing willow twigs to the corrugated paper until the journal is covered with twigs. Place a heavy book atop the twigs to hold them in place while the glue dries.
    Stone Journal

    Materials:

    Purchased journal notebook
    Rice paper or handmade paper
Flat stones (gathered from the beach or purchased from a garden center)
    Grosgrain ribbon
    White glue
    Glue gun and hot glue
    Scissors
    Heavy book

    1. Cut a piece of rice paper or handmade paper the size of the notebook's cover. For a more natural look, tear the edges of the paper (figure D).

    2. Glue the paper to the cover of the journal with white glue. Place a heavy book on top of the journal while the glue sets up.

    3. Apply a small amount of hot glue to the back of each flat stone, and glue stones to the paper in a pleasing design. Avoid covering the entire journal cover with stones because the book would be too heavy. Vicki made a circle of stones in the center of the cover and added a stone to each corner (figure E).

    4. Create a bookmark by hot-gluing a stone to one end of a piece of grosgrain ribbon (figure F).
