Q: I know pomanders are popular around the holidays, but do you have any suggestions for making them during the rest of the year? A: (From Debbie Stapley, Ask DIY Crafts expert) Instead of using citrus and cloves, the traditional holiday materials, you can make year-round pomanders from foam and flowers. Hanging Pomander Materials: Hard Styrofoam(TM) ball Wire Floral U-pins Sheet moss Ribbon (Stapley used wire-edge French ribbon) Glue gun and glue sticks Dried or pressed flowers Essential oil (optional) - Wrap a length of wire around the ball and make a loop at the top for hanging (figure A).
- Use a floral U-pin (figure B) to secure the loop (figure C).
- Cover the ball with sheet moss (wet or dry), using more U-pins to secure it ( figure D).
- When the ball is completely covered, wind ribbon around the wire loop to camouflage it (figure E). If you wish, you can also tie a length of ribbon around the globe and knot it or tie it in a bow (figure F).
- Hot-glue dried or pressed flowers to the moss (figure G). You may prefer to place the flowers at random, or you can completely cover the ball with flowers.
- If you want the pomander to be fragrant, add essential oil.
Fresh Flower Pomander (figure H) Materials: Floral-foam ball Sheet moss Floral U-pins Flowerpot Awl Fresh flowers (flowers with sturdy stems -- e.g., roses, heather, freesia -- work best for this project) Scissors, knife or floral shears - Soak the floral-foam ball in water, then cover the ball with moss, attaching it with U-pins as in the previous project (figure I).
- Set the moss-covered ball in the flowerpot (it will be very heavy).
- Trim the stems of the flowers you wish to use.
- Use the awl to make holes in the ball wherever you wish to place a flower (figure J) and insert a flower in each hole (figure K).
- Cover the ball completely with flowers, or place blossoms at random over the surface (figure L).
Lavender Pomander Materials: Styrofoam ball Household glue Brush Dried lavender blossoms Decorative ribbon - Use a brush to coat the foam ball in glue.
- Roll the sticky foam ball in lavender blossoms (figure M).
- Let the glue dry and then repeat these two steps until the ball is coated in lavender (figure N).
- Add a ribbon to the pomander and display it in a bowl (figure O).
