Add a touch of romance to your decor with this dried rose ball.

Craft artist Dohki Mirmirani creates a dried floral swag and uses it to add decorative interest to the back of an ordinary bench.

    Materials:

    Floral tape
    30 stems of trailing ivy
30 stems of dried pink or burgundy roses
30 stems of dried white roses
20 stems of dried hydrangea blossoms
    Reel wire
    Medium-gauge wire
    4' thin braided raffia

    Double-Leg Mount

A double-leg mount wiring is used to strengthen the flower stems in the swag.

    1. To create the double-leg mount, first place a 24" medium-gauge wire through the stems of the flower bunch so that about 2/3 of the wire is on one side and 1/3 is on the other. Bend the shorter end of the wire down to form a hairpin.

    2. Twist the longer end around the stem and the shorter piece of wire, leaving two sides of equal length.

    Creating the Swag

    1. Form a hanging loop at the end of the spool wire; attach the braided raffia and hang from a hook in your working space.

    2. Cut hydrangeas, leaving a 4" stem. Wire with a double-leg mount, then tape the wired stem with floral tape.

    3. Arrange 3 to 5 roses in hand and cut the stems 3" to 4" long. Use 12" of medium-gauge wire to form a hairpin shape (figure A). Hold loop over flower stems and bend one end of the wire over and around the stems, binding them securely (but not too tightly). Wind the wire around the stems 3 or 4 times, then tape with floral tape. Continue bunching roses until all are used.

    4. Bind 5 stems of ivy together and place over the braided raffia base. Bind with spool wire by passing the wire back up between the leaves and base and pulling down to other side.

    5. Place hydrangea over the raffia and ivy. Attach using the same technique as in step 4.

    6. Add a bunch of prepared roses overlapping the hydrangea (figure B).

    7. Repeat sequence until all flowers are used. Arrange flowers as desired, but reverse direction of flower bunches at the end (to create matching swag ends).

    Dried Rose Ball

Seeking another project that uses dried roses? Craft artist Dohki Mirmirani offers this lovely decorative rose ball.

    Materials:

    8" plastic foam ball
    250 dried rose heads
    Wire
    Ribbon
    Glue

    1. Glue roses around foam ball until completely covered.

    2. Cut about 8" of wire. Bend wire in the middle and insert center of ribbon through.

    3. Twist the ends of the wire and insert firmly into the ball.

    4. Hand-finish ball as desired.
