With the prep work complete, the first phase of the sports-den remodel includes installation of new base molding and carpet. The carpet selected came in the form of 18"x18" commercial-grade carpet tiles which can be easily installed using double-sided tape.

    Materials:

    Carpet tiles
    Baseboard trim
    Hammer
    Pneumatic nail-gun
    Finishing nails
    Utility knife
    Straight edge
    Double-sided carpet tape
    Caulk sealant
    Knee pads

Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with power tools and pneumatic tools.

    Baseboards

    • To replace the old 3-1/2" baseboard trim, a heavier 5-1/2" trim was selected to provide a more substantial look.

    • When the old molding was removed, it was discovered that there was a gap of about 3/4" was discovered between the edge of the sub-floor and the walls. Wood strips cut to the proper length were installed as spacers between the flooring and the wall (figure A).

    • The pre-cut molding was installed using an air-nailer and finish nails (figure C). The molding pieces were miter-cut at the ends to ensure a clean fit at the corners.

    • Caulk sealer was used to seal the small space where the molding met the wall (figure C) to complete the baseboard installation (figure D).

    Carpet Tile

    • The carpet tile layout incorporated a design in the center section of the room reminiscent of a baseball diamond. To create the design, solid-black carpet tiles were used for the diamond shape and outside borders while multi-colored tiles formed the background. Advantages of using commercial-grade carpet tiles include easy cleanup of spills as well as easy installation and removal of the tiles themselves.

    • To create the diamond pattern, measurements were taken at the center of the wall at both ends of the room. A chalk-line was then snapped connecting the two points to mark the center-line of the room (figure E).

    • Repeat the process on the other two walls to locate the center-point of the room.

    • Using double-sided carpet tape, apply tape around the perimeter of the room.

    • Once tape has been applied to the perimeter, apply it in a series of "X" patterns, with the center of the X's at the room's center-point (figure F).

Tip: It may help to place the tape just slightly off-center so that you can still see the layout mark for the exact center-point.

    • Peel away the tape backing, and begin placing the black tiles, working from the center outward (figure G) to create the black diamond.

Important: As you install carpet tiles, make sure that the nap and/or pattern is all going in the same direction.

    • Since our room was broken into two sections, with partial support-walls dividing the two areas, two of the tiles had to be cut using a straight-edge and utility knife (figure H) so that the tiles could fit precisely into the space.

    • The cut-outs allowed a perfect fit around the perpendicular wall extensions ( figure I).

    • Continue working from the center of the room outward, placing the patterned tiles around the black diamond (figure J).

    • Consult your plan to verify the number of patterned tiles you'll need. Once the patterned tiles have all been put down, place the black tiles to form the outer border -- finishing up with the corner tiles (figure K).

In the segment that follows, a ceiling fan and decorative light fixtures are installed.
