If you're installing new carpet, make the most of your time by replacing damaged baseboards at the same time.
Remove damaged baseboards by using a nail set to push the finish nails all the way through the baseboards (figure A), or pry them off, using a pry bar (figure B) with plywood backing to protect the wall.
Use the molding you remove as a template for cutting new baseboard trim. Cut the molding with a miter box or coping saw as appropriate. If you plan to paint or stain the molding, do so before attaching it to the wall.
Use shims to bring the molding level with the surrounding molding, and secure the molding to the wall with finish nails. Set the nails below the surface of the molding, and fill the holes with wood putty. Finish the installation by touching up any nicks or scratches.
