    Transfer of Parts

A number of the old parts can be used in conjunction with the supercharger. With the intake manifold and a number of other parts removed, and the new coolant pipe installed, work can begin on transferring a number of existing truck-parts onto the supercharger assembly.

Important: Included below are the steps in this automotive procedure as shown in the episode. The supercharger kit shown in this episode is made especially for the model truck shown. Installation of a supercharger on other vehicles will vary. These steps are general guidelines. With any particular vehicle, there will be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type of performance-enhancement kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive upgrades, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and precautions that come with your kit or replacement parts.

Safety Alert: Always wear eye protection, and follow proper safety precautions, when working with power tools.

Safety Alert: As a standard safety precaution, always disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable before you begin work on any electrical or mechanical components.

    • The throttle body can be re-used with the new supercharger, so unbolt and remove it (figure A). Also remove the studs, as they can be transferred as well.(You may need to spray the studs with penetrating oil in order to remove them without damaging them.)

    • Install the studs on the supercharger, install the gasket, and position the throttle body on the supercharger (figure B). Reuse the old nuts to tighten the throttle body onto the studs.

    • Remove and transfer the purge solenoid from the old engine to the supercharger (figure C).

    • Next install the MAP sensor. The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor helps calculate the air-fuel mixture for the engine. It mounts on the back side of the supercharger body (figure D), and his held in place with a small clamp and button-head screw. Lubricate the MAP sensor seal before installing it to prevent it from tearing during installation.

    • Transfer the power-brake booster hose. Replace the hose clamps with new ones if they are worn.

    • Remove the fuel-pressure regulator from the old engine (figure E), making sure that you get all parts out, including the small O-ring that fits against the spacer.

    • Make sure that the fuel-pressure regulator is intact, including the small O-ring (figure F), and install it into the block that comes with the supercharger.

    • Press the regulator into the opening until it's well-seated, then use a C-clip to secure it (figure G).

    • Remove the port plug from the fuel rail on the supercharger, and insert an O-ring into the port.

    • With this O-ring in place, you can bolt the fuel-pressure regulator assembly into position on the fuel rail (figure H).

    • Two fittings need to be installed onto the regulator assembly. On this particular kit, the larger-diameter fitting goes to the outside port. Make sure that it has an O-ring in place. The smaller fitting goes to the inside port (figure I).

Note: Don't use thread tape on these particular fittings.

    • Install the gaskets into the intake-manifold ports on the supercharger. Each gasket has small ribs that help keep it in place (figure J). Make certain that each of the gaskets is firmly seated. Repeat the process on all eight ports.

    • Before installing the new supercharger, a new bracket assembly (figure K) must be installed in order to accept it. It mounts directly to the block in the same manner as the old one. The new one is designed specifically for the supercharger, with extra pulleys and a new belt-tensioner.

    • With the bracket in place, the next step is to install the idler pulley that came with the kit. It consists of three pieces -- a spacer, bolt and the pulley itself (figure L).

    • With the spacer in place, install the pulley onto the bracket so that the spacer is against the bracket (figure M). Tighten down the idler pulley with the appropriate socket.

    • Clean off the top of the block with a shop cloth -- and an air-gun if you have one.

    • After you've made sure that any aluminum filings or debris have been cleaned away, remove the protective tape from the ports (figure N) and remove any glue residue that the tape may have left behind.

    • Before installing the supercharger, spray the surface of the cylinder heads with a light film of silicone-based lubricant (figure O). This will help the seals set into place properly.

    • You're now ready to position and install the supercharger. The assembly is heavy, so it's advisable to have a friend help you set in place (figure P).

    • Once the supercharger is securely in position, secure it with the bolts provided (figure Q).

Important: As with any intake manifold, there are torque specs and a torque sequence for these bolts. Check and follow your manufacturer's instructions.

In the segment that follows, work begins on re-assembly and installation of the cooling system.
