  • Quick Tip: Changing Your Oil
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-210
    advertisement

Some people say to change your automobile's oil every 6,000 miles, says Ask DIY Car Care Expert Trisha Hessinger, while others recommend every 3,000. So what's right? Oil is critical for your engine, so every 3,000 miles is the best. You can go longer between changes if you do a lot of driving, particularly if you put in a lot of highway miles. That's because on the highway the engine really has a chance to warm up and work at its optimal level. If you drive short distances just a few times a week, the engine never has a chance to get going so its oil gets dirtier faster, with a build-up of metal particles.
