  • Kitchen: Tour of the New Lighting Design
  • From "DIY Lighting Design"
    episode DLTD-103

In this segment, host Denise Dillon and guest interior designer Bette Raburn take you on a tour of the newly lit kitchen.

    • The garden window (figure A) lets more light into the kitchen, but for privacy some personal items were placed on the glass shelf and windowsill.

    • The sconces (figure B) bring more light in the room, but their best feature is that they fit flat against the cabinets. "Bringing light in from the side is a much better idea than bringing it down from above," Raburn says. "It doesn't shadow the face as much."

    • The under-cabinet lighting (figure C) works well with its soft, ambient glow.

    • The pendant lights above the bar area (figure D) are on a dimmer and can give off bright light with their halogen bulbs. And instead of just one light, the homeowners now have three in this area. The same goes for the pendant light that was placed over the office desk.

    • The glass shelving for the cabinets above the refrigerator and the rope lighting above all the cabinets (figure E) make a dramatic difference. They fill in the dark spots with an overall soft and ambient light that works perfectly for this kitchen.

    • Finally, the wall art can now be seen (figure F) since an eyeball light was installed above. This was probably the darkest spot in the kitchen before the new lighting design.
