  • Bedroom / Sitting Room: Tour of the Newly Lit Rooms
  • From "DIY Lighting Design"
    episode DLTD-102

In this segment, host Denise Dillon and guest Shane Meder give a tour of the two newly lit rooms.

    Sitting Room

    • The huge mirror in the sitting room was taken down off the wall and now perches on the glass table (figure A) in order to reflect more light from the windows across the room, which gives a nice balance of natural light. A small lamp was added on top of the glass table as well.

    • The floor lamp in the sitting room was removed and replaced with a better "reading" light (figure B), which is lower to the ground and easier for the reader to reach.

    • A new accent lamp was added to the small table by the window, which gives task lighting for the phone.

Note: With the three new lamps in the sitting room, Meder was able to add a "triangle" of light to the room, which achieves the perfect balance.

    • And the final touch was the ceiling fan with a light and remote control (figure C)!

    Bedroom

    • With sofa by the windows was reupholstered with a lighter-shade fabric (figure D) in order to allow more natural light from the windows to be distributed into the room.

Note: Along with the sofa a table was brought in, and the lamp that sits on it adds more light to the room.

    • The homeowners kept the huge mirror in the room, but two tall lamps (figure E) were added to the table below. These lamps are nothing more than accent lighting -- low-voltage, high-end decorative lamps.

    • Mirrors and recessed lighting were added to the wet bar area (figure F), which not only added beauty to the room but ample lighting for that spot. The recessed lights give good task lighting for preparing coffee in the morning and cocktails at night.

    • The mantel had the most visible transformation with the addition of mantel lamps, which have half-shades in order for the lamp to fit right up against the wall, and new art, which comes in tall sections that can be perched against the wall (figure G).

    • The bedside lamps are now at "regulation" height, and they match the decor beautifully (figure H). And now the homeowners will have ample illumination when reading at night. The lamps also have a remote control feature for convenience.

    • And finally, with the addition of a new paint scheme, rope lighting around the molding in the ceiling, a ceiling fan and light and the new lamps on the fireplace mantel, this bedroom now has the perfect blend of practical, whimsical and romance (figure I).
