    Installing Lights

    Materials:

    Tarp to cover floor
    Ladder
    Electrical tester
    Safety goggles
    Screwdriver
    Measuring tape
    Drill
    Saw
    Wire stripper
    Wire nuts
    4" recessed can hole saw

For any job involving wiring and electricity, it's best to hire a professional, but if you do choose to do the job yourself, please be careful.

    1. First, turn off the power at the breaker box before working with electricity.

    2. To install recessed cans, you'll have to plan exactly where you want them to go first.

Note: Make sure the lights are far enough away from the wall (figure C) so the light isn't lost "on" the walls.

    3. Take the template that's supplied with the can, find the center hole, mark it and then cut it with a hole saw (figure D).

Tip: In an attic situation such as with this project, it's always better to push the drywall up into the attic through the hole to keep the insulation from falling out.

    4. The wires have been laid out in the attic to connect from can to can and to the power source.

    5. Pull the wires through the can hole and strip them (figure E). The black wire is the power source (hot), the white is the neutral and the non-insulated wire is the grounding.

    6. Connect the wires together -- black to black, white to white and ground to ground -- and secure with a wire nut.

    7. Replace the cover of the can, and push it up into the hole (figure F), and use a screwdriver to insert the supports into the drywall to secure the can.

    8. Finally, place the trim around the hole and insert the bulb.

    9. With the recessed lights in, the next project is the ceiling fan. Remove the old light by unscrewing the cover, the bracket and removing the globe.

    10. Next, the bracket (figure G) for the new ceiling fan is installed by securing it with screws.

    11. Connect the wires, and because this fan has a remote control, there's an extra set or wires to connect.

    12. Secure the canopy onto the bracket, secure the five blades, attach the globe -- and then you're ready to tryout the remote control to see if the new ceiling fan works (figure H).

    13. With the hard wiring finished in the sitting room, the rope lighting in the bedroom is next.

Note: Rope lighting can be found at any home improvement center, and it's actually easy to install.

    14. Simply plug in the end (figure I), tighten the sleeve and then plug into the connection in the ceiling. The connector wire is attached in the attic to the recessed cans, which will be on the same switch as the rope lighting.

    15. Next, just lay the rope along the edge of the molding, and it helps to have someone assist with this task (figure J).

    16. Flip the switch and enjoy the warm glow (figure K)!

In the next segment you'll see the "lighting" transformation of the two rooms.
