  • Bedroom / Sitting Room: Accessing the Lighting Flaws
  • From "DIY Lighting Design"
    episode DLTD-102

In this segment of DIY Lighting Design "Bedroom and Sitting Room" episode, host Denise Dillon and guest Shane Meder access the two rooms for lighting flaws and share what can be done to improve the distribution of light.

There is a myriad of lighting problems in the bedroom and sitting room for this particular project:

    Bedroom

    • Both of the homeowners love to read at night, but the lamps on the nightstands are too low. In fact, they aren't even. One is higher and one is a bit lower (figure A).

    • The bedroom has four can-recessed lights, but they are too close to the corners (figure B). The average can will throw off approximately 4' radius of light, and in this case the majority of light is being lost in the corners of the room.

Note: The new paint job will help distribute the recessed lighting more evenly.

    • The ceiling (figure C) fan doesn't have a light, and this will be changed to add more brightness to the room. Rope lighting will be added around the ceiling not only for the romantic effect, but for the illumination.

    • This bedroom also has a beautiful fireplace and piece of art on the mantel (figure D). Meder suggests the focus should be the fireplace and mantel, and not the art. This can be accomplished with clever lighting.

    • The wet bar area (figure E) is also dark, but Meder plans to add mirrors and lighting to lighten the area.

    • One wall of the bedroom has five large windows, but a dark couch blocks much of the light. And right next to the couch is the large dresser with a mirror (figure F). Meder says a lighter fabric for the couch and mirrors that match the wet bar area will help this space dramatically.

    Sitting Room

    • The bedroom opens up into a sitting room (figure G) that has a ceiling light and one lone floor lamp. "The key thing in having a sitting area," Meder says, "is you want light -- that task light -- that helps you read or needlepoint or whatever they're doing at the time." This current lighting just didn't get the job done. Floor lamps shoot the light up and not "on" the subject.

    • The ceiling fan is going to be replace with a ceiling fan and light to give the room a dramatic "Casablanca" feel. Four recessed can lights will be added around the fan. When the homeowners come home, they can flip one switch and have instant evenly distributed lighting.

    • One of the walls in the sitting room has a glass table and mirror (figure H), and Meder plans to add a light on either side of the table to add drama to the room.

    • The homeowners also want to extend the same green and sienna paint from the bedroom into this room with very bold stripes, but even though most people believe painting a room will make it darker, Meder says this is an old myth. "A $14 gallon of paint can't make a room darker or smaller," he says. In actuality, the interior design industry uses paint as a theory and source of light.

    • The final touch for the two rooms is to separate the two rooms with a pair of side panels with a wooden rod with rings for black velvet curtains. This will give the homeowners the option of closing the room when is watching television, for example, in the bedroom and one wants to read or relax in the sitting room.

There's plenty of work to be done, and in the next segment, the labor begins.
