  • Living Room / Dining Room: Lightening Up the Place
  • From "DIY Lighting Design"
    episode DLTD-101

In this segment, host Denise Dillon and guest Doug Weiss continue to lighten up the bungalow's living and dining room.

    Lightening Up the Living Room

    • Dillon and Weiss start by rolling out new carpet in the living room, which leads right to an important area -- the table with a mirror above it on the wall. The homeowners had this lamp (figure A) in another room, and Weiss thought the size and color would look great in the living room on the table below the mirror.

    • A reading lamp was added to the chair beside the fireplace to create a cozy reading area. Remember that the bookshelf behind the chair now has rope lighting. A throw and pillow were added to add some color (figure B) to the living room.

    • A love seat from another room was moved in front of the windows in the living room to replace the table that was there before. And the tall lamps from the dining room were placed on tables on either side of the love seat to add more light to the room.

    • A beautiful painting replaced the platter on the fireplace mantle, and with the newly installed recessed light. A couple of candles were added on either side of the painting, along with some accessories. With this whole new look, your eyes are pulled right into the painting (figure C).

      Brightening the Dining Room

    • The green globes were replaced with white, lighter, ones.

    • New lamps were purchased to replace the ones that now reside in the living room beside the love seat. They are lighter and brighter as well (figure D) and look great on the table.

    • Above the painting in the dining room, a battery-operated light was installed to give off a showcase ray of light.

    • Rope lighting was added to the China cabinet earlier, and now Weiss places different-height candles to the top to add height and a touch of romance to the room (figure E).

    • A different, much larger, plant was added to the corner and to highlight it, a plant light (figure F) with a spike on the end was embedded in the dirt to cast a light up over the entire plant. It adds a nice dramatic effect to the room.
